Zamboanga del Norte overview

Zamboanga del Norte in Mindanao is well off the tourist trail but is among the most visited of all Philippine cities thanks to its location as the gateway to the Sulu Archipelago. As with much of Mindanao, guerrilla insurgency has plagued the region and while relatively quiet these days it is advisable to check security reports before venturing to the Island. The capital of Zamboanga del Norte is Dipolog City, which, unlike nearby Dapitan, has succumbed to the demands of industry. With massive forests surrounding the cities, logging is commonplace and sawmills litter the coastline. The region also contains vital cash crops such as rice, coconut, corn, cattle and fish. The tourist centre is around Dakak Bay, where a sunset horse ride along the beach is mesmerising. Despite obvious signs of industrialization Zamboanga del Norte still lays claim to lush scenery and an inviting atmosphere for the intrepid traveller.
