Laguna overview

Because of its close proximity to Manila, Laguna is a good getaway for tourists who are bored of polluted and overcrowded cities. Just 30kms south of the capital, the province of Laguna is not touristy and is laid back – perfect for nature lovers and history aficionados. The province is completely surrounded by the Laguna de Bay; one of the largest lakes in Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, farther south of Laguna is the inactive volcano of Mt Makiling – popular for its bubbling mud pots. Although fenced off from mountain trekkers, you can still peep on the steaming sulphuric mud. You are however advised not to come closer to the mud pots or you will end up in a hospital. The ancestral house of the country’s national hero, Jose Rizal, can also be found in Laguna. Unfortunately, you might be disappointed after seeing the historical shrine remodelled, with its facade painted in green.
